Renaissance der Mitte is the result of a research project of the TU Berlin on the urban development restructuring of the city centers of London and Berlin since the 1980s. Using the comprehensive renewal processes in both towns, the authors show that the city center is experiencing a renaissance in Europe. They also discuss the effects of this trend on urban development in general and on sociology and politics in particular. Following the transformation of historical towns into metropolitan centers and radical modernization attempts, postmodern urban development aims to use design to stage tradition and innovation. This results in its basic areas of interest: the recovery and new creation of public space, revaluation of waterside locations, rehabilitation of passageways and traditional types of squares, density and mixture of functions.
